What is insomnia?Insomnia is a big problem to many in our modern, high stress world. The term insomnia covers a large range of sleep problems, from lack of quantity of sleep to lack of quality of sleep. The word comes from the Latin “in” (not) and “somnus” (sleep) and is a widespread problem; it’s estimated that about 40% of the population will suffer from insomnia at one time or another. Insomnia affects all age groups. It is for some reason more common in adult women than adult men. The problem often gives rise to under performance at work or school, becoming overweight, depression, anxiety, slower reaction times, and an increased risk and severity of long-term disease. Insomnia is commonly separated into three types which is really just based on of how long the problem lasts. Transient insomnia occurs when symptoms last from a few days to a few weeks. A clear reason exists like an important event, the excitement of a planned holiday or a minor illness. When this principal cause ends your sleep problem ends and you return to normal. This is considered a natural part of life as everyone suffers from short-term insomnia from time to time. Intermittent insomnia is when symptoms last for several weeks. If your insomnia starts to occur more regularly, so that it could be described as “off and on”, then you are experiencing intermittent insomnia. It may be that over time you find that the episodes of insomnia are become closer together. They may even start lasting for slightly longer each time too. This is usually a clear warning sign that should not be ignored. Now is the time to start taking some action to stop the situation getting out of hand. It’s far easier to correct the problem now than later. Chronic insomnia is characterized by insomnia that lasts for months and years. Once you reach this stage your sleep is being affected on most nights. At this point your insomnia will undoubtedly be impacting upon the quality of your life generally and may lead to increased risk of disease and mental disorders.
